Under the Magnolia Tree

As I mentioned on Facebook yesterday, the Cherry Blossoms in High Park did not have a banner year in 2014, which left a lot of photographers and other visitors desperately looking for colour. A Magnolia tree became an instant magnet, and was surrounded by a crowd. While this image was shot on black and white film, I thought it might be interesting to add a pink tinge in post, to bring back some colour.

Shoot What’s There

There were a lot of disappointed photographers in High Park, Toronto today. The blossoming of the cherry blossoms was pretty much a bust this year, due to the very cold/late spring. Luckily there is no shortage of alternate subject matter available. As I continued my fisheye kick, I tried out the LensBaby fisheye optic (mounted in the Composer) on a film camera: my Nikon F2, loaded with Rollei 80s film. On the full frame 35mm I almost get a complete circle. I quite like the result. 🙂

Ice at the Shore

Another image of a cold Lake Ontario shoreline. Even though it was a bright sunny day, using the very slow speed Eastman 2366 film (EI 15 or so), mean a rather slow shutter speed (around 1/30th of a second I believe)

A Road We’ll All Travel

This past Saturday I went again to St. James Cemetery in Toronto, and I liked the look of this freshly plowed road leading to a mausoleum. I used my 200mm/f4 lens on my Pentax 67, roughly equivalent to a 100-135mm telephoto lens in 35mm.

Snow, Not Sand

I finally finished a roll of Eastman 2366 duplicating film yesterday, both started and finished at the shores of Lake Ontario in Toronto’s Beaches district. 2366 is a slow (EI 15) very sharp film that I am really learning to love the look of! In this image, a casual glance might lead one to think it was sand, but this is all snow, on a bitterly cold January day.

Back to the Graveyard

Today I went back to the snowy graveyard where I had a shoot late Thursday afternoon. I love the curved iron gate in front of this mausoleum, and the pipes that lead to the arched doorway. I just love lines!

At the Beach

This morning I took advantage of a striking winter sun and went down to Sugar Beach in Toronto. Although the sun was bright the wind was bitter, and it was challenge using the camera with thick gloves on,

The film I used (for the first time) was Eastman Duplicating film 2366, a specialized stock with high contrast, high sharpness and very fine grain. I was shooting into the sun so there is some inevitable highlight blow-out but I think it suits the look.

Urban Desolation

Today’s image was created near the base of the Don River in Toronto.  It is a rather desolate part of town in my opinion, but there are still interesting shapes and lines.

Behind the Veil

Today another image from High Park, shot on Rollei 80s film with a red filter. I continue to be amazed at the different reality I get with this film/filter combo. It’s look pulling back a veil.
