The second image from my recent photo shoot withZoë, this time with my Mamiya 645 Pro TL, the most “modern” (relatively speaking) of the cameras I took along for the shoot. Film was one of my last rolls of Plus-X in medium format. F

Zoë 1
Yesterday I had a great shoot with Zoë, a talented friend from the theatre world. I was packing three very different film cameras, so I will write three separate blog posts, one for each camera. Today’s image was taken with my Zenit 3M 35mm SLR and Helios 44/2 lens, shot wide open with a yellow filter. Its background swirl and bokeh are unique. I added some vignetting in post to the negative scan.
Portrait of Artist: Brent Morris
It struck me in a moment of after-the-fact obviousness that my images of Brent needed to be in my Portrait of the Artist series. As a podcaster and video game designer, Brent has a lot of creative depth, and as I work more with the vintage Petzval lens for portrait work, to my eyes it is a great lens for capturing the depth of a person’s character, and Brent does have a lot of depth and character!
All images were created with my Speed Graphic 4×5, shot on EFKE Ortho 25 film.
More Petzval Portraits
On Sunday of this past weekend I met up with my friend and fellow film photographer Ori, who agreed to pose for a couple of portraits shot with my 1950’s era 4×5 Speed Graphic camera, with my mid 1860’s Brass Petzval lens. The film was expired EFKE, with a speed of 25, sadly no longer made. This stock is orthochromatic, meaning not sensitive to red light, which was pretty standard for the 19th century, and great for male portraits.
I am finally happy with the results from this lens, meaning that I now want to shoot as many people as possible with it! 🙂

Channeling the Winter
Yesterday I had a film and digital shoot with my friend and frequent collaborator Cate Hopkins. I’m going to start with one of the digital images. By the icy shores of Lake Ontario, on a very bright (if cold!) day, Cate wore a white dress and and white wig, and the combination was perfect for high key photography.

Adriana Through the Helios 44/2
Today, two images from my Allan Gardens shoot with my good friend Adriana this past Saturday. These images are from a roll of Tri-X shot on a Pentax Spotmatic with one of my Helios 44/2 58mm lenses. A classic camera, classic film and a classic lens came together nicely, and Adriana’s expressions were classic as well!
