What a Coincidence!

Today’s image has quite a story to it! I made this picture in Peggy’s Cove, Nova Scotia, Canada in 2007 while on vacation with my family. A couple was getting married on the rocks, and everyone around got to be a temporary member of a congregation, although the little flower girl in the right side of the image spent most of her time dancing around the rocks instead of paying attention. At the end of the ceremony the couple kissed, people applauded and the ceremony was over. End of story until this morning. So why am I posting an older image, taken using a digital camera (my old Digital Rebel) and in colour?

Today I received an email from a man in Germany, who was the groom, who found the picture and was very happy to have it, as he did not have many pictures of the ceremony. Little online miracles like this make me smile 🙂

From a Distance

Almost all of my people photography recently has been close-up (e.g. head/shoulders) so this image is a bit different. The subject is more than the woman on her smart-phone; it is her position relative to the concrete wall and steps/railing that is the key for me; a small touch of humanity in the midst of stone.

Take What Is Given

Sometimes you have to work very hard to get the shot you want.

Then there is the image below: taken in Victoria this week, all I had to do was literally look down from my hotel room balcony to see this interesting composition. To not take the image would have been an affront to opportunity.

More of the Best of Both Worlds

Today another image from my photo session with Mysty. Again, I used the hybrid approach of shooting on film, and then using digital post processing; this is really becoming my favourite workflow, as I take advantage of the best of both the film and digital worlds. What a great time to be a photographer!

A Long Slow Day

My last image was of a smiling island local, in a sense performing for tourists. In a sense, this picture is related: it depicts an employee of the BVI resort where were stayed; part of the job involved just sitting during quiet times, alone with one’s thoughts. For both of these men, are their lives defined for just being there for rich tourists?

Distilled

At lunch on an island, a local hanging around the restaurant posing for photographs and getting free drinks. This image for me distills the experience.

Lines

I was drawn to the pattern of lines and shapes, as emphasized by the low morning sun, and further emphasized by increasing the contrast of the final image.

Unbalanced

It’s been a while since I posted an image that a) was in colour and b) covered a subject other than the British Virgin Islands, so time for some variety.

I was photographing a concert last weekend (a very successful fundraiser for earthquake victims in New Zealand, held at a church in central Toronto). A concert in this setting can’t help but have a sense of formalism; the audience is expected to sit in the pews, and choirs take up defined positions in front of the audience to sing; everything is balanced.

Except for the foot thrust into the picture 🙂

Getting to What I Saw

I was struck by the way this boat jutted out, like it had been thrust onto shore. Originally shot in colour with my D90, I used Silver Efex Pro 2 with a heavy red filter setting to darken the sky as much as possible. This plug-in really helped me go from what the camera recorded to what I saw.

Copper Mine Ruins

Back to digital for this one: one of the more interesting sites on Virgin Gorda is an old copper mine from the 19th century; on the top of a hill by the ocean, there are amazing images in every direction! This image was captured in colour, then converted to black and white with Silver Efex Pro 2.
