I am thrilled to announce I have been included in the latest issue of Jim Austin‘s online Photography eZine Shizen, released today.

Jim is also an extremely accomplished photographer in his own right, as well as being a positive and supportive presence in the photography community online.

This issue’s theme is trees, and I am honoured to have my work featured along with some truly great photographers!

Deeper Than Any Forest Primeval

I guess I’m an old softie at heart: one of my favourite love songs is “Longer” by Dan Fogelberg. As I was out yesterday morning in High Park in the forest path near Keele Station, the dim light from the morning overcast and the silence reminded me of a line from the song:

Deeper than any forest primeval, I am in love with you.”

The forest did feel very deep and moody yesterday, and these three images for me capture the mood. All were created using my Nikon N90s 35mm SLR, 17mm/3.5 Tamron Ultra-wide angle lens, shot on Rollei RPX400 film, developed in Perceptol.

A Change In Plans

On Sunday I went to High Park to do some shooting that required a bright sunny sky. I didn’t get the sky I wanted, so I switched gears and went into one of the forest trails, where the light was deep and moody.

Not By Design

Slow speed films such as Rollei RPX 25 are contrasty by nature and don’t take kindly to overexposure, and in today’s image I totally blew it. After some work on the scan in post though I can up with this result and I find the effect interesting, although I suppose it could just be considered a post-hoc rationalization.
