The First Day of the Year

I have made it a tradition the last few years to go out camera in hand on the morning of January 1st, regardless of the weather. This year was grey and cool for most of the day, but I still went down to the Beaches in the morning, with my Nikon F2 and three lenses. This image was taken with my 50mm/1.4 lens, on TMax 400 film.

The F2 is one of my cameras that doesn’t get used as much as it should as, and I have more than a couple of cameras in that category, so one of my photography goals for 2016 is, no buying of cameras or lenses (repair/replacement excepted, as needed)! Time to use more of what I have.

Coffee and Portrait

I met up with my friend Jennifer yesterday at a Starbucks here in Toronto, and it marked the first time I have done a portrait shoot inside a busy downtown coffee shop. I was shooting with my Kodak Medalist which does not have the closest focusing lens (but otherwise a great piece of glass). Shooting wide open at f3.5 on Kodak Tmax 400 film, developed in Xtol and post work with Nik Efex.

Old and New

This image was taken last weekend in a graveyard in southeastern Toronto. I took it with my Rolleiflex using Tmax 40o film, and then because of the extreme contrast of the lighting spent some time playing around with the negative scan, and the result I like the best has an old look to it.

Ideal Format?

Today, another image captured yesterday at the Distillery District in Toronto with my Pentax 67. the 6 cm by 7 cm format has been called by some the “ideal format”; one reason is that you can print on 8×10 paper with no cropping to speak of. By contrast, 35mm would required 8×12 paper to do the same.

Despite this, I found a couple of my images worked better when cropped as square (or at least “squarish”), including this image. With the sun still relatively low in the horizon at 10 am on a mid October day I liked the start look of the shadows on the building.
