Yesterday the Classic Camera Revival Podcast (of which I am one of hosts) held a film photography meet-up in Hamilton, Ontario. G.A.S. stands for “Gear Acquisition Syndrome” the desire for film shooters to always get one more piece of gear. 🙂 I took this portrait of one of the attendees with my Kodak Medalist 620 camera, using respooled Ilford HP5+ film, developed in Ilfosol 3.
The interior of BCE Place in downtown Toronto is photographed so often that it is difficult to avoid the cliched images that have been taken so often. In this image I tried changing the angle to get the building within the building.

I’ve never had much luck with Ilford HP5+ in 35mm; my scans always had too much grain for my taste, and I didn’t like the tonality. Shooting in medium format (at an exposure index of 250 instead of the box speed of 400) I am liking the results better!

Today, one of the film images from the session with Jennifer this past Saturday. This shoot marked the first time I used a recently acquired Helios 44/2 lens (58mm, f2). This lens is a Soviet Russian era copy of a Carl Zeiss Biotar, and has quite a cult following in certain circles. The fact that its focal length is slightly longer than normal for a “normal” lens makes it great for portrait work. In this shoot I had it mounted on my Yashica TL-Electro. The lighting was not bright, so I was shooting wide open at 1/60th of a second, on Ilford HP5+, pushed to E.I. 800. I like the gritty, documentary look I got: it is a good match for Jennifer’s intense expression. She is a master at bringing emotion into a shoot!
