Earlier this year I was in downtown Toronto on Front Street with my Sony A7ii camera. At the right time of day, and bright sunlight you can get some interesting building reflections. I lined up the sun behind the construction crane, and added the equivalent of a dark red filter in post.
I do shoot digital as well as film, and also like shooting with my iPhone! (I am no purist!!). And on the iPhone I do enjoy the Tintype app, among others. I took this image near Tobermory earlier this year.
Earlier this spring I went to Elora, Ontario along with a few other photo friends. Walking in the park near the river gorge, the light was subtle, dim, and quite atmospheric.
Earlier this year I spent a couple of days in Tobermory, Ontario. The first day was unseasonable cold, with rain, mist and fog. It made for some great atmosphere in the harbour though! I took both images with my Rolleiflex 3.5E3, using Ilford HP5+ film, pushed one stop to EI 800.
Recently I have started using Rollei Retro 80s film with an IR 72 filter again, for an infrared look. On a bright sunny day at midday I rate the combo at EI 2, typically shooting a 1/2 second exposure at f/16. Even though this is not a true infrared film stock, I do like the look I get.
I took both images with my Rolleiflex 3.5E3 twinlens reflex. TLR’s and rangefinders are great for infrared work, compared to SLR’s as the IR 72 filter is almost completely opaque to visible light.
After a bit of a pause, my friend Vicky joined me today for my Only Cafe Portrait Series Project.
I took this image earlier this year on a grey day in the Beaches in Toronto. The lines in the fence reminded me of the COVID disease graphs that have become part of our reality since 2022.
So much of my work continues to look gloomy…
Near the Brickworks in Toronto recently.
I can’t help be worried about the world we are living in right now: war, climate change, disease and the rise of rightwing extremism. It seems most of my non-portrait photography also reflects my concerns.
A bit of a different approach to my Only Cafe Portrait project this time around. It was later in the day when a few of use got together, and the light was different. Still I like this image of my friend Lisa.
