What Am I Working On These Days?

My friend (and talented author) Alice Dugan contacted me today, to ask me if she could tag me in a “Work in Progress Blog Tour” that she was involved in. I said it sounded like fun and it has been a couple of weeks since my last blog post, so it serves as a kick in the pants to get me going.

The ironic thing is that I have no time for making new photographs right now, since I am very busy preparing for my upcoming photography exhibit The Silver Path. It’s been pretty labour intensive, since all the prints are hand-done by me in the darkroom. I’ve gotten to the point where all the printing is done, and now I have to select forty prints from the roughly sixty I’ve done to be hung at the exhibit. Next, I need to hand retouch any dust spots etc. from the prints, then cut mattes and frame the prints, plus various other logistical items in advance of the opening show reception on April 10th. Exciting and scary times!

I’ve also started podcasting again, after a multi-year absence! I am involved in two podcasts: The first is Classic Camera Revival, which I do with three friends, where we geek out on film-based photography. (No surprise, right?) The second podcast is my new personal journal podcast called MPP. What MPP stands for changes with each episode 🙂

Next, I am thoroughly enjoying being with the Exultate Chamber Singers this year, after attending their concerts for a quarter century. I’m looking forward to our next concert this Friday, where I get some solo quartet work. Another exciting/scary combo!

Finally, my other two big goals this year (along with the photo exhibit) both have to do with writing. I am trying my hand at writing an urban fantasy novella, inspired in no small part by Alice’s enjoyable efforts in this genre. I have posted three snippets so far, here, here and here. My other writing goal this year is to finish the first draft of my musical done (started in 2014). Here is a sample of one song.

I think  I must be out of my mind! But I don’t think I could handle life any other way: if I keep my life crowded, I can keep the demons on the waiting list forever.

Now I am going to tag my good friend (and fellow film photography fanatic) Mike Bitaxi: a talented and clever fellow!

Channeling the Winter

Yesterday I had a film and digital shoot with my friend and frequent collaborator Cate Hopkins. I’m going to start with one of the digital images. By the icy shores of Lake Ontario, on a very bright (if cold!) day, Cate wore a white dress and and white wig, and the combination was perfect for high key photography.

Show Information

One of the ironies of preparing for a photography exhibit is that I don’t have much time for new photography, so it has been a little quiet here. I do have a shoot tomorrow so there will be some new images finally!

I do want to post so more information on the show so here is the link to the show page:

Three for the Show

My mission tonight is to make 11″ by 14″ prints of these images taken yesterday at the bitterly cold shores of Lake Ontario. I was very happy at how the images turned out, so I think they merit a place in my upcoming photo exhibition. All three were taken with my Pentax 6×7 medium format camera, an oversized beast that  works well in gloved hands 🙂 I shot one roll of my limited stock of Kodak Plus-X film ,sadly no longer made.

Adriana Through the Helios 44/2

Today, two images from my Allan Gardens shoot with my good friend Adriana this past Saturday. These images are from a roll of Tri-X shot on a Pentax Spotmatic with one of my Helios 44/2 58mm lenses. A classic camera, classic film and a classic lens came together nicely, and Adriana’s expressions were classic as well!

In the Garden

Yesterday I had a shoot with my good friend Adriana. On a cold winter’s day, the best place to get some soft outdoor light without freezing was the greenhouse at Allan Gardens here in Toronto 🙂

Another Shoot With Naima

On Sunday I had another shoot with Naima, this time outdoors on a decidedly chilly day, in the ravine near Yonge and St. Clair. Naima was a real trooper and did not let the cold get in the way of a great shoot.

Ready for the Moment

Today, another image of Justin Miller during his back stage transformation into Pearle Harbour. This image does not capture a pose; Justin was applying a spray-on fixative to set his complex make-up. I saw it and instinctively clicked the shutter.

Backstage

This past Friday evening I photographed actor Justin Miller’s transformation into his character Pearle Harbour. Along with the digital images, I shot a roll of Tri-X at EI 800 on my Bessa R rangefinder, with my late 50’s-era Canon Serenar 50mm/1.8 lens. I was shooting wide-open at f1.8, at 1/30th of second, and I like the available light look of the image.
