One of my goals for 2017 is to do more night photography so last night I went with my good friend Bill Smith down to the Beaches to try shooting a test roll of Rollei RPX100, to determine the best exposure. My favourite image is this one, shot with my Hasselblad 500C/M and 50mm/4 Distagon lens. The exposure time was 15 seconds @ f8.
Another attempt at hand-tinting, this time of an image of my favourite trees in High Park, Toronto. I ended up with a more muted effect here.

This is the first post with my new (to me) Nikon P600. It was a very dark dull morning by the water in the Toronto Beaches. I got it specifically for the super zoom capability for the total solar eclipse in the midwest US in August 2017, although this images is more medium-wide.

I had been planning to post this image of the Edward Johnson building (Faculty of Music, University of Toronto), and while I was getting it ready this morning it struck me that the lines of shadow cast by the railings looked like a musical staff turned on its side.

This past Thursday I went early before choir practice to St. Thomas’s Anglican Church in Toronto. The sanctuary was silent, decorated for Christmas to come. A feeling of expectancy was in the air. Tonight at 11 pm the sanctuary will be full, the candles will be lit, the music sung. Merry Christmas to all.

Another image from my first roll shot in the Voigtlander Bessa 66 medium format folder. On Sunday morning the best views of Philosopher’s Walk on the U of T campus seemed to be straight into the sun, which usually results in a lot of flare. I placed the sun behind a tree branch to try to minimize it, and I do like the results.

This past Sunday was a glorious winter day: bright and clear, with a dazzling crystal light: like being inside the diamond. The sharp lines and shadows that would have made an outdoor portrait session very difficult made other kinds of images possible.
This was the first time I had shot on the Voigtlander Bessa 66 120 format folding camera, given to me by my friend David Kent. This model has the amazing Color Skopar lens, and I am very impressed with its sharpness.

It has been a while since I last tried hand colouring. I took a different approach this time: rather than using Marshall photo oils on a darkroom print, I tried a matte photo paper inkjet print, and pencil crayons. Some further work will be needed to see what works and what doesn’t.

I have decided to post one last image from the Chinese Garden in Vancouver, exploring the frame within the frame.
Also a, promo for my podcast MPP (My Photography Podcast). It has morphed from a personal diary show to more of a photography show, but personal elements will always remain.
