Dangerous and Domestic Part 2

Today’s image is another one from the “Dangerous and Domestic” shoot with the very talented Mallory, using the original prop that she suggested to skewer the cliche in the subject matter. πŸ™‚ One of my favourite kind of concepts is taking a standard idea (in this case, sexy woman on motorbike) and twisting it, taking a poke at the underlying assumptions and stereotypes.

Artificial Hipster

I took this picture of a fellow film enthusiast named Joe at the recent Analog’s Pulse event in Cleveland. When I saw this ridiculous ad I knew I had to comment somehow.

Cleveland - Analog Pulse

Film shooters are often derided as self-important hipsters, more concerned with projecting an image, rather than creating images, and ads like this just add to the misconception. For me, film shooters are more like the guy in front of the ad, who quietly does what he loves.

The ad is artificial. The shooter is real!

More Reflections

I believe I’ve mentioned before that I love reflection shots (mirrors, glass walls on buildings etc.) I saw this mirror ball in Cleveland a couple of weeks ago and couldn’t resist. If you look closely you’ll see me in the reflection, so it does qualify as a self-portrait πŸ™‚

Cleveland

“Cleveland??” The U.S. border guard looked at me with a mixture of suspicion and surprise, as if there were no good reason to go to Cleveland. Thankfully that is not the case, and last weekend I had a lot of fun attending Analog Pulse, a film photography event in Cleveland, Ohio, put on by the Aperture Photo and Variety store. (The photo today is Fuji slide film, cross-processed as C-41, taken during the “Cross Process Walk” part of the event.) It was a really fun day, and it was great meeting a number of people in person that I only had met online up until then. As for Cleveland, the downtown is lovely and very photogenic!

The Monolith

Today’s image was taken this past holiday Monday in the Rock Garden portion of the Royal Botanical Gardens in Burlington, not far from Toronto. I was quite struck by the beauty of this area of the garden, and the large tree stump to me acts like a station or monolith; not alive, but still exerting dominance over the space.

Instant Gratification

The guys on theΒ Film Photography Podcast spend a lot of time talking about shooting instant photography, so I decided to take the plunge, and through the FPP store I got a lovely Polaroid 100 Land camera, for which Fuji still makes colour and black and white film packs (the peel apart variety). During the instant photo walk in Cleveland on Saturday (as part of the Analog Pulse Photography Meet-up, to be covered in a future post), I took this image using the FP-C 100 colour instant film. The process of shooting instant is a lot of fun, different from both traditional film and digital shooting, with its own kind of slightly delayed instant gratification. I’m hooked πŸ™‚

Cleveland Street View

Early Morning

It was sometime between 7:30 and 8:00, walking along the Rideau Canal in Ottawa on a Sunday morning during PAB 2012 weekend. It was clear and bright, with the promise of a warm day ahead, but with early morning stillness upon the water.

Built to Last

This picture was taken last week in Arizona; I used my Leica IIIb, with the Voigtlander Color Skopar 21mm/f4 super wide-angle lens. This picture was taken sometime after I had dropped the camera by accident on a rather unforgiving pavement. Ouch. Luckily, either than a bent filter ring (which I can likely fix), the camera survived just fine. I can’t help but think that if this had been a modern day plastic camera it would have broken into a number of pieces.

Pardon the cliche, but they don’t make them like the used to!

Details

While in Arizona for the week, I was fortunate on the business outing yesterday to visit Frank Lloyd Wright’s Taliesin West Complex, his winter home and architectural school. I took many images, mainly film, but did take a few digital shots, including this one a of a detail of a sculpture near the main entrance. Everywhere one looks in this Complex, there are amazing lines, both on large and small scales. It was a truly unforgettable experience!
