Back Alley in Kingston

In Kingston, Ontario this past weekend we discovered this little back passage-way. Rollei Retro 80s film and Rodinal developer were the perfect combo for this image!

Something Slightly Different

This image is from our trip to Niagara On the Lake this past weekend. It was a gazebo, so I had to shoot it, but to me the woman stretching out in front gives the image a slightly different, almost surreal aspect; it would be a very different image without her.

A Soggy Day

It was a pretty soggy day in Niagara Falls yesterday, and the two film cameras I had with me had no weather sealing. I wanted this shot at the base of the American falls, so out came the Samsung Galaxy Note 3 Smart phone. Quite happy with the results!

The Expression

I was in Hamilton this past weekend at a social gathering with some of my best Social Media friends. On the way from supper Saturday to a pub we walked through the beginning of that evening’s Hamilton Art crawl. The street was already crowded with artists, musicians, performers and pedestrians of all kinds. I had literally not much more than a second or two to get this shot; technically it’s not perfect, but I like it — I wonder what the story is behind expression of the woman on the right! There must be a story there!

Top of the Stairs

From my early morning film shoot at the locks in Ottawa recently. I’m a sucker for stairs, and I love the combination of early morning light and hte stonework.

Early Morning Ottawa

Today a film image from my recent Ottawa trip. I love the long shadows and dramatic lighting of early mornings.

Don’t Shoot What You See, Capture What You Feel

In a lot of ways, this image is nowhere near being a realistic depiction of the scene in Ottawa early today: the use of a fisheye optic, the fact that is in monochrome and not colour, the application of a digital equivalent of a dark red filter, all of these in one sense make it unrealistic. On the other hand, what I found amazing this morning was the stark, dramatic lighting and lines in this part of Ottawa. This image shows what I felt, as much or more  than what I saw.

The Magic of Slide Film

I think slide film has its one particular magic: holding a strip of slide film in one’s hand is like holdng a collection of little universes, with each image being a doorway into  each world. Today’s image is from a roll of Fuji slide film I shot in England this summer using my medium format Mamiya 645 Pro TL

Cutty Sark 1 (Above deck)

In Greenwich, England the famous Tea shipping vessel the Cutty Sark is on display. Looking at all the ropes (I guess I should call them sheets, to be accurate) one can really get a sense of how complicated and sophisticated a sailing vessel can be. In it’s own way, very high-tech!

Lines

I am a sucker for lines, straight, curved, whatever: I like the way they take the eyes on a trip through the image. This maze in a park in Canterbury, England is just full of lines, and so I was hooked 🙂
