What I Saw

Today’s image is from a few days ago. I was in High Park, waiting for a model to arrive. It felt like one of the last warm days of the fall, and there was a glow to the air that the camera for some reason did not pick up fully. A bit of post work, and I added back what I saw/felt, but the camera didn’t.

Motion

Couldn’t resist, another image of Justine having fun in the leaves at High Park. In addition to her great expression, I love the motion blur on the leaves 🙂

Craft

Earlier this week I shot the final rehearsal for Mambo Italiano, a funny, touching and moving play being put on by Alexander Showcase Theatre. If you are on Facebook, you can see some of the pictures I took here. This is an amazing show, and well worth seeing! Today’s picture is one I took before the show began, of cast member Antonio Olivito stretching and warming up. I had the privilege of working with Antonio earlier this year in Man of La Mancha: he is an interesting mix of manic, spontaneous energy and a serious approach to the art and craft of theatre, and I’d like to think I captured that in this image.

Waiting for the Moment

This image was created last night, on the subway on my way home. I noticed this person as I got on the train, but she was always looking down. Then a baby started getting fussy, and I knew that it would only be a matter of time before she looked up.

Connection

I took this image on the subway on a trip downtown this afternoon. I was struck by the fact that they were sharing music via one headphone jack, but apart from that they were both in their own worlds: no words, glances etc. were exchanged until it was time to get off the train. Mysterious and intriguing!

Walkway

Today’s image is an iPhone 4S/Hipstamatic shot of a walkway at Kipling subway station, early in the morning dark. To me it always looks so cold and industrial.

Fatigue

Five days a week I am on the TTC, early. The image today was taken this morning on the Kipling bus, at about 6:50 a.m. You haven’t seen fatigue until you see transit riders at this time of day, and today was no exception.

Pedestrians Under Glass

Every now and then it’s fun to throw an iPhone photo into the mix. I took this image on the way to a meeting in downtown Toronto yesterday, timing it to get the pedestrian framed in the reflection in the building.

Background as Foreground

One more image from this past weekend’s shoot with Jennifer. As I think I’ve mentioned before, my strong preference for portraits is close-up: I am captivated by the human landscape of the face. I have to force myself to at least some of the time take a few steps back and attempt a portrait that is as much about the background as it is the subject. Guildwood Park in Toronto has a lot of great backgrounds to use, and as soon as I saw this sculpture, I knew that it would be perfect for a non-close-up image.

Not What You’re Thinking

Today’s image is a hand-tinted print of Ren from the steampunk shoot; I’ll be giving this print to her later today. You might be thinking that the bicycle was tinted orange to make it surrealistic, but actually the bike is this colour in real life; it is chained more or less permanently as a piece of art in a back alley on the U of T campus in downtown Toronto
