Two Images, One Story
Words and Images
I found this scene recently and was struck by the ironic contrast between the mural art and the words in the image, especially if one disregards the context of the words. Given recent events in the U.S. the irony becomes bitter.

My New Project
I spend a lot of time on the TTC (Toronto Transit Commission for those outside of Toronto). On average about twelve to fourteen hours a week. I actually prefer it to driving: I can read, close my eyes, listen to music. And, I can practice street-style photography, using my Smart Phone. So I am starting a new project called the Daily Commute Shoot: one photo taken and posted every workday during my commute either to or from work, , taken with my Samsung Galaxy Note 3 smartphone. You can see the results here. The image below is an outtake from yesterday. (I am three days into the project at this point).
Shooting From the Hip
When it comes to shooting from the hip, it’ hard to beat a twin lens reflex (TLR) camera. I was out yesterday on Queen Street in Toronto with my Rolleicord Va and for this shot I had already estimated the distance and used a small aperture of f11 to get good depth of field. The remained hanging down at my waist while I quickly took the image.

Playing Chess
Another image from the roll shot using the Pentax 200mm/f4 lens, this time of chess players in front of Metropolitan Church in downtown Toronto. There is always an interesting collection of characters in this location!

From a Distance
I finally got around to developing a roll I shot earlier this year: Ilford HP5 film, using a Pentax Spotmatic and a Pentax Super Takumar 200mm/f4 lens. Hard to beat the balance and feel of the Pentax lenses! Some street photography purists poo-poo using telephoto lenses for street work, calling it cheating, but I was there and this was the lens on the camera . . .

Hamilton Art Crawl
I am in Hamilton, Ontario this weekend for the inagural VoxPopCon conference. Last night after the conference opening we checked out the Hamilton Art Crawl: a great street festival, with an amazing vibe! Lots of positive, creative people on the street, including this guy:
