Different Gear

One more image of the Beaches last Saturday, but this one created using my iPhone and the Hipstamatic app. While most of my posts will continue to be film-based, I will likely continue to post more iPhone-created images. At the end of the day, it’s about the image, not the gear.

The View

The light down at the Beaches yesterday morning was incredible, as was the scene. Very cold, but dead calm, allowing the gathering of mist on the water. This man was excited by the scene, as he raced from spot to spot capturing the moment on his smartphone. Different gear, but a kindred spirit.

Framing Trees

Back to Lethbridge Alberta: I love frames within a photograph, and the way these trees on either side framed the more distant view was very appealing to me when I saw it.

Back to Banff

I have just returned from a two week work trip in Alberta, and I did have one weekend for photography, so it was up to Banff on Saturday. The day was brilliant, clear and cold.

Ageless

For this image of mature trees in High Park, I used my Canon P rangefinder from the early 1960’s, my Canon Serenar 50mm/1.8 lens from 1951, and developed the Tri-X film I used in Pyrocat-HD, a developer based on a 100+ year old formulation.  For something as ageless as a forest it seemed appropriate. 🙂

Getting the Filter Right

I’ve always wanted to get a dramatic sky photo, and finally I’ve found the combination! Rollei Retro 80s film, plus a 25A red filter and Polarizing filter stacked together. I took this with my Mamiya RZ67 and 65mm lens early on a Sunday morning at the Beaches, with the sun at a right angle, for maximum polarizing effect.

Alien World

Recently I was in Alberta for business meetings, and as I was staying over the weekend I had time to do some exploring and drove up to see the Badlands around Drumheller. These formations are called hoodoos; the day brought a bright overcast sky, and combined with a strong backlight the landscape had an alien look to it. While the hoodoos are not as big as one might think (only a few metres), their shape is fascinating.

Fragile Beauty

One of my images from this past Sunday morning at the Beaches. What I remember about this shot is that I had to spend some time before clearing the litter out of frame. People can be such pigs 😦
