Where You Find It

Another working trip to Calgary this week; I had my DSLR with me to do a portrait for a co-worker, but no real time for photography otherwise. I did notice an interesting light pattern in my hotel room though. You shoot it where you find it.

First Post With P600

This is the first post with my new (to me) Nikon P600. It was a very dark dull morning by the water in the Toronto Beaches. I got it specifically for the super zoom capability for the total solar eclipse in the midwest US in August 2017, although this images is more medium-wide.

Framed

I love images that have interior frames. This image is from the Chinese Garden in Vancouver. It was not a bright afternoon and I did not have a tripod with me to get the smaller aperture/slower shutter speed and larger depth of field I would have preferred for the colour film shot. I took the black and white retro-styled image with my iPhone and the Hipstamatic app.

Gallery Guard

Yesterday we went to the Vancouver Art Gallery to see the Walker Evans photography exhibit.  (Incredible and well worth seeing, by the way. If you’ve never seen top quality silver gelatin prints, this is an exhibit to see!). I happened to look through a doorway and saw a gallery employee in a perfect pose, framed by the building, so I quickly took the shot with my iPhone before he moved.

This is the second of two weeks away from the darkroom, so while I will be shooting film I can’t post it until my return to Toronto. So in the meantime, I will have fun with the Hipstamatic app on my iPhone. 🙂

Early Music

My wife Janice belongs to the early music ensemble Sine Nomine, and last night they put on a concert of 14th century music at St. Thomas’ Church in Toronto. I had a chance to take a couple of images with the Hipstamatic: one of some of the instruments used, and the other of the Bapistry at the back of the church.

My Friend

The Hipstamatic app on my iPhone will always in one sense be a guilty pleasure, as its affects are digital recreations of classic photographic techniques; my favourite are the wet plate / tintype effects. While no substitute for the real thing, it’s hard to imaging bringing a view camera and a portable darkroom in Podcamp Toronto 2016 yesterday to take a quick portrait of my friend Sylvain.
