It took a few steps to arrive at the image below (again featuring the lovely Jenna). The original was shot on Fuji Reala ISO 100 colour negative film, using my Rolleicord III twin-lens reflex camera. I had to shoot pretty wide open, and with my eyesight I find this beast a trick to focus at the best of times. her face was not tack sharp, but I liked the image so much I was not prepared to give up. I converted it into black and white, added the antique look and I felt instantly transported back a century.

Nina Among the Cherry Blossoms
Every year at around this time, people flock to High Park in Toronto to see the blooming of the Cherry blossoms. Delicate and lovely, they only last a few days at most. I thought it would be a nice setting for a portrait session with Nina Mason, a teacher and actress with whom I’ve had the pleasure of working with in a few Alexander Showcase Theatre productions. In contrast to the newness of the blossoms, I used some decidedly old technology: a 1950’s era Rolleicord III twin lens reflex camera, loaded with Fuji Reala colour negative film. I like shooting this camera with the Xenar lens fairly open, as I like the way the background and corners blur.
There is no new, there is no old; only timeless.
Old
Another image from my extended photo walk this past weekend. The camera (Nikon F, late 60’s/early 70’s) was old. The lens (24mm Nikkor wide-angle, mid-late 60’s) was old. The film was some Kodak Max ISO 400, a number of years past its expiration date. (We won’t even mention the photographer!). The building is old. Put all this oldness together, and I like the result. 🙂
Project 6-3-1 Update
Here is another image of Nicole Faye, one of the musicians I am working with for project 6-3-1. This image is a composite of three different images I took of Nicole, allowing her to to in effect channel the Supremes-esque 60’s Motown look.
Miami Art Deco Photo Walk
This week I am in Miami, but on business so it’s been extremely busy! I finally got some free time yesterday afternoon, so I went to the historic Art Deco area in South Beach. I shot lots of film, which I can start developing when I get back to Toronto, so in the meantime, here are a couple of Hipstamatic images.
Film coming later this week!
The Joy of Everyday Things
I was watching a video this morning about a woman who had been kidnapped for 18 years but managed to regain her freedom. Her interviewer commented on how she took pleasure from everyday things, no matter how small, and I think this applies to photography as well; it’s not always about the spectacular sunset, the exotic location, the once in a lifetime portrait. Photography can (and should) also be about everyday things, and the beauty that can be seen, if only we look a little harder
