The World of a Child # 2

Another image from my shoot last Saturday. This image was taken with my Nikon F4S and the Nikkor 105mm/2.5 lens, which is one of the greatest portrait lenses of all time.

Decay

On a recent Toronto Film Shooters walk, this decaying bicycle seat caught my eye, and the brilliant sunshine of the day made for dramatic lighting.

Merging

I like how the light in the trees sort of merges with the graffiti in the background.

Postcard From the Dystopia

I love the Beaches District in Toronto; I love Bluffers Park. Then there is Sugar Beach: a sad little boxed in spot, with a great view of a factory, and no shortage of “No Swimming signs.” I’ve shot there a few times as I find it fascinating, at the same time it repulses me.

A Child’s Excitement

I took this image at the recent Buskerfest in Toronto. Originally shot in colour, I like it better as black and white, so the image is more about the child’s expression of excitement, as opposed to the vivid yellow of the character’s dress in the original colour version.

Exaggerating Angles

The Michael Lee-Chin Crystal expansion of the Royal Ontario Museum was always controversial: a lot of people absolutely hated the look of this addition to a more traditional structure. From a photographic point of view though it offers a lot of possibilities. In this image (from the Open Streets event last weekend) I used my Voigtlander 15mm/4.5 SuperWide Heliar lens. This lens is among the wider in the 35mm format, and I like what it does with the already dramatic angles of this structure.

Trying Out a New Film

Thanks to my friend Bill Smith I tried Cinestill 50D film recently. This film is Kodak Movie stock, but with the black anti-halation backing removed, to make it easy and safe to process using standard C-41 chemistry. Both these images were taken at Harbourfront with my Nikon F2 SLR and 28mm/2.8 Nikkor lens.

End of a Roll

If you’re a 35mm film shooter you’ve been here: you have a couple of blank frames on a roll of film, and you don’t want to waste them so you look for something, anything to shoot to finish the roll. That was the case for this image: I wanted to see the other shots on the roll, had a few shots left, so on a day where the sun shone brightly onto a table in our sunroom, I got the idea of putting a mask in the sunlight and shooting it with my 55mm Micro-Nikkor macro lens. Very happy with the results!
